As you may, or may not know, I am an elementary education major and a major book lover. After all, why else would I work in the library?! Access and knowledge to more books, of course!
Well, my other love is northwest local, Powell’s. And, of course, Amazon. And as a future teacher, I have a love for children’s books that can equal none other. What does this whirlwind equation equal? My own library of children’s books.
So, what does this have to do with you? Well, book recommendations, of course, from ME! I can’t have ALL this knowledge of great, cute, and funny books and not share it! So, if you are a future teacher looking for great books to share with your students during your practica, a parent looking for a funny book to share with your kid, or a fellow bibliophile, now you can look out for… Alexandra Approves!
Tonight, Alexandra Approves…
Princess Pigtoria and the Pea by Pamela Duncan Edwards, illustrated by Henry Cole
If you like princesses, pigs, peas, or the letter P, you will like this book. A modern take on the tale of the Princess and the Pea, Pigtoria is a modern kind of princess pig. It is a great way to teach alliteration or the letter P to kids, and you can never underestimate the power of a peppers, pickles, poppy seeds, Parmesan cheese, peanuts (no pepperoni) pizza. And also yes, I
love pigs. But this book is priceless for another reason… That’s right: my fourth graders bought this for me at the book fair and they all signed it! One of my most precious books! I love them!
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith
I remember being read this book in the library by Mrs. Seawell when I was Kindergarten. I fell utterly in love with the satirical take on the gingerbread man and other fairy tales, and I decided that I needed to find that book so that I could read it again and again. Finally, I have this book in my possession. I am so excited to share this book with the students I know. Fairy tales are enough sometimes, but since when have you NOT wanted to know a story about a stinky cheese man? It is at least three times better than a story about a man made out of gingerbread. And at least three times stinkier. Have a stinky good time!
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems
In classic Pigeon style, Pigeon is again up to no good. Yes, he thinks that driving the bus will make him happy… but is he truly ready for all the responsibilities of driving? Well… probably not. Nonetheless, he tries every trick in the book in order to get him a shot at that bus. The question is… will they work? A great and funny read!
Well, that is all for now! I have many more books, but I have to save something for later! I hope you are looking forward to more books!
